Ceiling Fan Installation
Ceiling fan installation is very basic but it is absolutely imperative that you have a ceiling box that is able to support the weight of the ceiling fan at high speeds. A metal box that will extend from ceiling joist to ceiling joist is the best type to use. They do manufacture a box for existing drywall that you are able to screw into both joist from the hole that is made for the fan box that will make matters much easier for you so that you do not need to cut a big hole in the ceiling.
Step 1
Screw the mounting bracket to the box with screws that are no smaller than a 10/32 thread to support the weight of the fan. Assemble the fan on the floor, put whatever canopy's that need to go on top on then put on the rod and ball if it is not a ceiling hugger fan, also screw the fan blades into the brackets that hold them to the fan.
Step 2
Now for most fans you are able to hang the fan motor from the mounting bracket while you wire it so that you don't have to hold the fan in your hand, makes things much easier. If you are going to use a fan without a light kit then hook the fan up black wire to black wire, white wire to white wire and the ground wire goes around the ground screw of the mounting bracket and then to the green wires of the fan.
Step 3
Now the last thing to do is screw the fan blades to the fan motor. Now that that is done, turn your new fan on and it should work like a charm. Now if you bought a decent fan it should not wobble much at high speeds, if everything looks good and works good then that is a good job done by you.
I would recommend purchasing the following fans because of their quality, know that you will pay a bit more for these fans but on the flip side they do not wobble (if installed correctly), the motor will not make loud noises, and they will give you a very much needed cool breeze.
- Casablanca Ceiling Fans
- Hunter Ceiling Fans
- Hampton Bay Ceiling Fans
- Westinghouse Ceiling Fans
Now you might be wondering, I have read this guide on how to install a ceiling fan and I just don't think that I can handle a project like this, how much can I expect to pay a licensed electrician to come out and take care of this for me? If you have box in the ceiling, it is most likely not able to support the weight of a fan. To take that box out and put a new box that is rated for a fan in and install the fan you are looking at anywhere between $250-$450.
Also check out installing a remote fan control or a light kit for your fan.
