Replacing Light Fixtures
To replace a light fixture you need to first make sure the power to the fixture is off. Then take the old fixture and bracket completely off and install the new bracket that came with the fixture.
Fasten the bracket to the box in the ceiling or wall then wrap the bare wire from the fixture around the green ground screw on the bracket and then connect that wire to the ground wire in the box using a wire nut. Then twist the black wire from the light fixture to the black wire from the box and do the same with the white wires.
Finally use the two long screws that came with the fixture (you can also buy longer screws if you need to, 8/32-2" normally work good) to fasten the base to the bracket.
Look at the fixture ratings to see what size is bulb appropriate, don't go over what the rating is because the light fixture will get to hot and possibly start a fire. Then secure the globe to the base.
